As a second year I expect my Freshers week will be fairly
similar to yours.
In my opinion before you arrive at fresher’s week it is
highly recommended to buy one of the freshers masterpasses. Last year the
Outgoing Masterpass was £96 and the Easygoing Masterpass was roughly £50 (bit
fuzzy on the easygoing).
At the risk of sounding contradictory these Masterpasses are
overpriced. The likelihood of you going to all of the events available on the
masterpasses and making your money back is very unlikely.
I would also strongly suggest that buying tickets for events
which are not run by the university are a bad idea. The simple fact is, the
majority of people will not have bought these tickets and hence when you arrive
if you go to the event your new friends will not be there with you. A.k.a; you’re
not going to have a great time.
It is possible to buy event tickets separately to the
masterpass. It is also possible to buy entry into clubs as normal – so if you
really don’t have the money, don’t overly fret.
However, what you may not think about when you see that £96
price tag is how busy you will be upon arrival. During freshers week there are
things to do; compulsory introduction talks to your courses and more mundane
tasks such as setting up your room and planning how you’re going to get
pre-drinks ready for the upcoming night out.
The point I’m making is that everything will be so exciting
and so new you won’t want to waste your time trying to get tickets to events
when all your new friends already have masterpasses.
When you get to the clubs all the people with masterpasses
will walk straight in – but if you don’t have one the likelihood of you getting
in quickly are extremely slim; and you will stand out in the cold wishing you’d
just spent the money.
The other thing I’d like to point out is freshers was
probably one of the most exciting, exhilarating weeks I’ve had to date. Set
aside £200 (I’m afraid that is how much it will probably cost in the end), and
have the best time of your life.
After all; you only get one freshers.
